Caring for Your Verandah Candle

There are so many reasons to love candles. They create ambiance, fill the room with delightful scents, and add a touch of elegance to any space. Proper candle care not only enhances the performance and lifespan of your candles but also ensures a safe and pleasant experience. To make the most of your Verandah soy candle and ensure that it performs to its fullest potential, it's essential to follow some simple care tips.

The First Burn

The first time you light your soy candle; it's best to let it burn long enough for the entire surface to melt. Soy wax tends to have a memory of the point it reached the first time it was burned and will burn to the same point from then on. Therefore, it is ideal to allow the candle to burn for 3-4 hours or until the wax pool reaches the edge of the container. This helps to prevent tunneling, where only a small portion of the wax around the wick melts, leaving a ring of unused wax around the edges and making it harder for the cotton wick to burn the candle properly the next time that it is lit.

Trim the Wick

All of our candles are hand poured and made only with cotton wicks. All of our larger candles are double cotton wicked to provide a more even burn and faster scent throw. Before lighting your candle each time, the wick(s) should be trimmed to about 1/4 inch (6 mm). A longer untrimmed wick can cause uneven burning or a larger flame. Trimming the wick helps to ensure a clean and steady burn allowing for a better scent throw and extending the life of your soy candle.

Burn Time

In keeping with candle industry standards, it is advised not to burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Burning your candle for longer than the recommended standard of 4 hours might cause a buildup on the wick leading to an unstable, larger and hotter flame. Our candles are made with high quality fragrance oils and rigorously tested to ensure the proper wick size for safety, but over time certain scents may naturally cause more carbon buildup on the wick than others. Also, allowing the candle to cool for a couple of hours before relighting will help maximize the lifespan of your soy candle adding more hours of enjoyment.

Keep the wax pool clean

Avoid letting debris, such as wick trimmings, matches, or dust, fall into the soy wax pool. This can affect the candle's performance and may lead to uneven burning. A clean wax pool ensures an even burn each time by allowing the wick to process the wax more efficiently while extending the life of the candle. Keeping the wax pool clean also helps maintain the fragrance quality of your candle as well as its clean soy aesthetic appeal.

Store Properly

Store your soy candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Also avoid storing your candle in places with extreme temperature changes, such as attics or basements. Extreme heat can cause the wax to melt, while extreme cold can make it crack. Exposure to heat and light can also cause the wax to melt or discolor. Additionally, storing candles with lids or in airtight containers not only keeps dust from settling on them, but it also helps preserves their beautiful fragrance for future enjoyment.

Staying Safe

Always burn candles within sight and away from flammable objects.

Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.

Ensure candles are placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface to avoid accidents.

Place your candle in a draft-free area and away from open windows, fans, and air vents to prevent uneven burning and excessive flickering. Drafts can cause the candle to burn unevenly and produce soot.

Most importantly, never pick up or move a burning candle.
